Almost all traditional faith-based and supernatural oriented communities promise that our loved ones continue to exist beyond death through some supernatural process. Many, however, also offer some practical responses to the bereaved which can inspire how Naturalistic Humanists respond to loss. Traditional faith-based and supernatural oriented communities treat the remains of the deceased with dignity, and provide services where family and friends support mourners such as in the Jewish practice of sitting Shivah and the traditional Irish wake.
When sitting Shivah immediate family members spend time together for seven days to mourn, while the community visits bringing food and drink for mourners and guests. At an Irish wake family and friends gather, to share humorous or poignant memories, singing, poetry, food, and drink, in the presence of the body of the deceased.
At least anecdotally, delineating experiences like these appear to be helpful. Hopefully, objective research about the efficacy of such practices will one day be undertaken.
